Crocheted Swirly Scarf

Instructor:
Laurie Sims
Enrollment: 10
Students will learn basic crochet
techniques and stitches while stitching a short sample. The sample will
exhibit the entire pattern so the student can use it at home as a
reference to complete the full size scarf. Many students will have time
to begin the final piece. Classroom discussions will include pattern
interpretation and other crochet tips and techniques. Skill level -
novice to intermediate.
Workshop fee: $25.00 -
Includes pattern, stitch diagrams,
other printed materials.
Saturday AM - Half day class
Materials student must bring to class:
Beautiful Yarn! About 300 yards -
It can be sport weight, worsted, or bulky; or anything in-between. It
can be single or plied, solid, variegated or painted, commercial or
handspun, wool or cotton or silk or bamboo or blends. If you are a
novice crocheter, please avoid novelty yarns, the kind that are fuzzy,
lumpy. loosely spun, embellished or other unusual textures. Please wind
it if it is not already in a pullable skein or cone.
Crochet hook(s) - I believe there is no one
perfect hook for any given yarn. And because stitch sizes vary from
stitcher to stitcher, I suggest you bring what you have or what looks
right and we'll try them out. If you are buying a hook for this project,
get what the yarn store suggests for the yarn you buy. If you're not
sure, err on the side of slightly bigger rather than smaller. I'll have
some assorted sizes too.
(I actually use two hook sizes for this
scarf. One for the base chain and one slightly smaller for the rest of
the pattern).
An apple for the teacher.
(other fruits and snacks are good too.)

Finding and Creating Your Personal Palette
-
Instructor:
Linda Whiting
Enrollment: 10
Has color mystified you? Do you
shudder when you have to choose colors for a project or when you want to
dye some fiber? Starting with paint chips we will examine your color
preferences, then work together with acid dyes to create blended colors
that 'speak' to you, ones that you can recreate when you dye your fiber.
Learn about warm and cool colors, color mixing, and using a proportional
system to create the colors that you want. This is a class for you if
you want to 'get out of the jar' and define and create the colors you
like so you can feel more confident in dyeing the colors you want to
use. You won't believe all the colors we'll be creating.
Workshop fee:
$65
Friday - All
day class
Materials student must bring to class: paint chips of eight
colors you really love and five colors you do not love, pencil and fine
point permanent pen for notes on your color work pages.

Painting
the Skein You Want
-
Instructor:
Linda Whiting
Enrollment: 8
Ever looked at a gorgeous skein of
yarn and wondered how it was created, how the colors blended just so, or
how the dyer managed to create such colors? In this workshop we'll
be using different mixing methods, a variety of pots and pans, and tools
to create wonderful color combinations. Learn how to mix dyes, make
stock solutions, get colors you want beyond the color in the jar and
create different effects. Really get to know your dyes and what you can
do with them. Throw away your
preconceived notions about color and come with an open mind ready to
break the bonds of “the jar”. A little figurative magic ‘pixie dust’ and
a day of playing with color will change your perspective and allow you
to make your own rules. Then you can choose to follow those rules or
keep playing.
Workshop fee: $75
– Includes dyes, dust masks, tools, tagging materials, skein of sock
yarn and
dye booklet.
Saturday - All day class
Materials student must bring to class:
Pen or pencil for note-taking, additional yarn or
roving to dye, an apron, gloves (optional), and plastic bags or
containers in which to transport wet fiber home. Additional yarns,
roving and dyes will be available for purchase.

Knitting to Gauge
- Instructor:
Rindy O'Brien
Enrollment: 8
A
gauge class doesn't sound very sexy, and many knitters don't like to
take the time to do a gauge swatch, but it is probably the single, most
important piece of knowledge needed for proper fit or to make your own
designs. if the gauge is off, your item will be end up being too large
or too small. In this class you will learn how to measure your gauge
and explore the differences that needle sizes and yarn grist make. You
need to be able to knit & purl to do this class. Bring to class several
yarns of different weights and types, and needles in sizes 6, 9 & 13 or
whatever you have (it doesn’t matter whether the needles are double

Knitting From Charts
- Instructor:
Rindy O'Brien
Enrollment: 8
Knitting from
charts can be intimidating if you have never done it before, but once
you get the knack it is faster and easier than line by line directions
because it presents a visual image to follow. You can look at your
knitting then look at the chart and see where you are going and where
you have been. It is very useful when knitting lace patterns, doing
color work, and especially when knitting an Aran sweater where
there are a number of different patterns going on at the same time. In
this class we will try out a bit of lace, a bit of color work, some
cables, and try our hand at charting a simple pattern.
